Canada has lost the men’s curling semifinal 5-3 to the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
It was a tight game with the two teams trading points throughout most of the match.
A mistake in the eighth end allowed the U.S. to steal two points, bringing the score to 4-2 going into the ninth.
Canadian skip Kevin Koe made a mistake with his last rock in the ninth and was only able to score a single point, instead of the two he was probably hoping for.
He went into the final end without the hammer and was unable to pick up any points. The U.S. scored a single to end the game at 5-3.
Canada will play Switzerland for the bronze on Feb. 23. The United States will play Sweden in the gold medal game on Feb. 24.
Canadian men had won three straight Olympic curling gold medals – Brad Jacobs (2014), Kevin Martin (2010) and Brad Gushue (2006) – while never missing a final at the Games since the sport was reintroduced in 1998.
Canada’s women’s team was left out of medal contention after a poor showing in the round robin portion of the tournament. But Canada’s mixed doubles team captured the gold medal early in the Olympics.
