Excited shoppers in three Ontario towns were lined up in the early morning hours as U.S. discount retailer Target made its Canadian debut Tuesday.
Three “pilot” stores opened their doors in the towns of Fergus, Milton, and Guelph, Ontario.
They are the first of what Target hopes will be as many as 135 locations across Canada.
But some shoppers were surprised to discover that the bargains they were used to at U.S. Target locations weren’t quite as sweet north of the border.

The difference in Canadian and U.S. tax laws meant the prospect of keeping those discounts the same were unlikely.
Target says they are focused on being “competitively priced” with other major retailers in Canada.
