EDMONTON- A fire has caused major damage to a condo complex at the Panorama Mountain Village ski resort near Invermere B.C.
The fire broke out early Wednesday morning at 1000 Peaks Lodge at the base of the ski resort.
Crews managed to contain the flames to the top floor of the five storey building.
A team from the Rabbit Hill Ski Club was staying at the lodge when the fire broke out. The team was preparing for the U16 CanAm Championships at the Panorama ski resort this weekend.
Everyone was able to make it out of the hotel safely however, all of the team’s equipment was lost in the fire.

“When they were woken up in the middle of the night with the fire alarm and the lights and what not, everybody basically bolted straight up out of bed and grabbed either a pair of shoes or a cell phone and headed out, and all of their ski racing gear and helmets and skis and boots, and all of that, was all just left in the hotel rooms,” said Terry Mix, whose 14-year-old son is on the team.
Mix says the team is heading back to Edmonton, and despite many generous offers of replacement equipment, the team will not be taking part in this weekend’s races.
“We can’t get the right amount of gear in a quick enough time to get them back out there,” Mix said. “The weekend’s events, for our team anyways, have all ended before they got started.”
Hotel guests have been moved to other facilities in the resort.
Up to 12 condos, which are individually owned, were gutted in the fire while others suffered extensive water damage.
Fire crews remained on the scene Wednesday afternoon to put out hot spots.
The resort remains in full operation while firefighters investigate the cause.
All of the hotel guests made it out safely and there were no injuries reported.
