The Fraser Institute basis its rankings on nine academic indicators using data from the annual Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) administered by Alberta Education.

“By pinpointing the subject areas in which individual schools are improving or declining and how their academic performance compares to that of other Alberta schools over the past five years, our report helps parents and educators prioritize learning challenges in their schools,” said Peter Cowley, Fraser Institute director of school performance studies.

However, Edmonton Catholic Schools believes parents should be looking at factors other than test scores when picking a school for their child.

“At Edmonton Catholic Schools we don’t believe that the Fraser report gives us an accurate depiction of a student’s ability,” said Lori Nagy, a spokesperson with Edmonton Catholic Schools.

The complete results for all 659 elementary schools is available on the Fraser Institute’s website.
