Prayer complaint to be investigated by Sask. Human Rights Commission

SASKATOON – The man trying to have Merry Christmas removed from city buses has another complaint moving forward.

Ashu Solo says the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission [SHRC] has found reasonable grounds to proceed with his complaint over a prayer at a volunteer appreciation banquet.

Solo made the complaint after Mayor Don Atchison called on Councillor Randy Donauer to give a prayer at the banquet on April 18, 2012.

He asked for the city to apologize and to promise not to use prayer again at civic events, but that did not happen.

It was then he filed his complaint.

SHRC found there were reasonable grounds the prayer violated Solo’s freedom of conscience under province’s Human Rights Code.

The finding also found grounds for discrimination on the prohibited grounds of religion.

An investigation will now be launched and mediation could resolve the complaint.

If not, a hearing will then be held.
