Popular Alberta campsites already booking up

CALGARY- Looking to get out of town? On Tuesday, the province opened up its online reservation system ahead of what’s sure to be another busy camping season.

Popular campsites can be booked solid up to three months in advance, and just a couple hours after reservations opened there were already nearly 2,800 bookings. For May long-weekend, all of the powered sites in Kananaskis country have been claimed.

The province acknowledges there is a shortage of campsites, and is working to add new ones along with adding power to unserviced sites.

“We’re constantly increasing the number that are available,” says Dr. Richard Starke, minister of Alberta tourism, parks and recreation. “On certain weekends and at certain campgrounds, we’ll probably always have shortages.”

Some sneaky campers have been booking sites for the days ahead of their arrival as well, to ensure a spot.

“It makes it harder for people who really want to go camping on a certain weekend to get in, because other people are there but they’re not showing up,” complains Wayne Kent of Guarantee RV.

Another option is to head to B.C. or Alberta for a serviced site, though the extra travel time can be a problem for short stays.
