CALGARY – Costco employees are standing outside the South Costco on Heritage Gate SE Saturday morning, announcing on a mega-phone that customers won’t be able to shop.
That’s because Hazardous Materials crews are still on scene ventilating the building, after a large volume of refrigerator gas leaked into the building around 5 a.m.

Responding fire crews discovered that a mechanical failure of a refrigeration unit led to the release of the freon into the warehouse.
Freon is a colourless gas with a faint sweet odour and is considered a respiratory irritant.
There were no injuries reported and crews say the Costco should re-open later this afternoon.
