A Manitoba RCMP officer is facing charges after he allegedly left his service pistol in a hotel room.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has recommended charges be laid against Const. Geremy Newbury for careless storage of a firearm.

The IIU investigation was launched Aug. 17 after a report an officer left his unsecured service pistol in a Northern Manitoba hotel room after checking out.

“The IIU has conducted a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances of the incident, and Civilian Director Zane Tessler is satisfied there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred,” a statement from the IIU released Monday said.

Newbury was informed of the charge of Dec. 15. He is set to appear in Provincial Court in Flin Flon Feb. 1, 2018.
