Vigilant security guard credited with saving a senior’s life

A South Granville security guard hadn’t seen a senior she often talked to for three days, and she had an uneasy feeling about it.

Determined to follow through on her hunch, she paid a visit to the elderly woman’s home.

There was no answer. But thankfully, the security guard didn’t give up, and that likely saved the senior’s life.

In just five months on the job, patrolling the south Granville business district,
Bonnie Yang has really made an impression and made many new friends.

In that short time, the security guard has gotten to know the regulars, including an elderly neighbourhood resident named Corinne.

About a week and a half ago, Yang and the owner of a local coffee shop realized the 94-year-old hadn’t been by in several days, after faithfully coming in for more than a decade.

Yang checked at all of Corinne’s regular stops, and when no one could remember seeing the senior, she got really worried.

“Then I just went to the building, called manager three times, and finally he came out. We knocked on her door, there was no answer. We got the key and opened the door, and she was on the floor,” says Yang.

Dehydrated and hungry, it’s not clear how long Corinne had been lying there, but likely at least two days, and no one came looking, except Bonnie Yang.

“In a big city like Vancouver that sense of a community does tend to disappear, especially in the downtown area, and to still have that sense of care and community is awesome to see,” says Bonnie’s supervisor Ashley Meehan.

Corinne is recovering in hospital, but wasn’t able to talk.

Yang has been by to visit, with a couple of oatmeal raisin cookies from the coffee shop, but she insists she’s no hero.

“We always have to be caring for our community, especially the old people. They are so lonely,” says Yang. “I wish I could do more.”
