Online error affecting business owner and Edmonton school

EDMONTON – An Edmonton-area business owner is getting dozens of phone calls a day, but most of them are from students looking for Centre High rather than potential clients.

“I can get up to 25 plus calls a day for people looking for the high school,” Landon Kolesar says.

That’s because the number Google has listed for the downtown Edmonton school actually belongs to Kolesar’s landscaping company, High Grade Inc. And after almost two years of trying to get the search engine giant to fix the typo, Kolesar has been unsuccessful.

“To get ahold of them, like I said before, is virtually impossible for me. I’ve even set up Google Adword account to try to get more plugged in with them.”

When Kolesar did finally get through to someone, he says the person told him it wasn’t his department.

Google tells Global News it’s continuously exploring ways to integrate new information and recognizes there may be occasional inaccuracies. It says it has introduced the ‘report a problem’ tool to help users reach Google about necessary updates.

Kolesar says he tried that tool, but received no response. And he doesn’t feel he should be forced to change his business number over a problem that he feels should be very easy for the internet giant to fix.

Officials at Centre High say they have been trying to get the problem addressed with the Google, as well. They succeeded in getting the map location corrected about six months ago, but say the phone number error continues to be a problem.

Google says it’s looking into the complaint.
