Regina’s Warehouse District launches new book

Regina’s warehouse district hosted a book launch on Wednesday
morning, to celebrate the culture and architectural change it has seen since
the early 1990s.

The 65-chapter book includes vintage photos and stories about some
of the city’s pioneers.

“We have a number of heritage buildings in the area, but they
don’t mean anything to people until they know those families that lived here,
that built the businesses, and what the businesses were,” says Audrey Price,
executive director of Regina’s warehouse district.

Buildings that were highlighted in the book include Dad’s Cookies,
Regina’s first brewery, the Brownstone Plaza and the old General Motors
building.

But the launch of the new book comes on the heels of one of the
warehouse district’s oldest businesses.

Yarnton’s Decorating was founded in 1906 and has moved locations
five times since then. Three years ago, the owners tried to sell the business
but were unsuccessful.

Bill Turbuck, owner of Yarnton’s Decorating, says “There are some
family businesses that are still strong, but the ones that are trying to sell
that I know of, their children don’t want it.”

But still, Turbuck believes the warehouse district is a great
place for local businesses to thrive.

“I think if you’re a businessman, you’d want to be down here.
Forget about going east or south,” says Turbuck.

With the city’s upcoming plans for construction on the CP land,
the warehouse district is bound to see even more change within the coming
years.
