Mom says Health Link saved her daughter’s life

A Calgary mother is going public to thank a nurse she credits with saving the life of her one-year-old daughter.

Several months ago Betty Hildebrand called Health Link because she was worried about her daughter Georgia’s cough.

Pam Murray was the nurse who took the call. Health Link nurses can’t diagnose medical problems but rather help assess the level of care needed. Murray knew something was very wrong when she heard Georgia’s cough.

“The cough was just this really, really deep harsh cough and she wasn’t that old. That’s when we decided she really does need to be seen by a pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital.”

Hildebrand took Murray’s advice and is thankful she did. It turned out Georgia had a life-threatening condition.

“They (the hospital) actually ended up doing an x-ray and by the time we got home we found that her aorta was actually turned just to the right”, says Hildebrand.

Georgia had a condition called “vascular ring”. The largest vessel to her heart, the aorta, was wrapped around her trachea and esophagus, choking her.

Now completely recovered, Georgia, along with her mom, met with Murray on Wednesday to say “thanks”.

“It just makes your heart sing,” says Murray. “She just looks so healthy and to know that I had just a little piece in making her better – it makes it all worth it.”
