Calgary man dies while vacationing in Belize

CALGARY- Reports are emerging from the country of Belize that a Calgary man has died there while in police custody.

Channel 5 Belize is reporting that 35-year-old Jeffery Furgala had been in the country for two weeks, to help build a home. It’s believed that on Saturday night, he was taken to a holding cell in the San Ignacio police station because he was intoxicated.

There are unconfirmed reports Furgala was found unconscious in the cell and rushed to hospital in a coma, before dying of head injuries on Monday night.

Friends tell Global News family members flew down to be with Furgala before he passed away.

Family members have posted messages on Facebook saying Furgala was “the finest warrior, the boldest, wisest man. You fought with honor, now rest in peace, now I’ll protect our clan.”

News agencies in Belize are reporting the police investigation into the incident found Furgala fell in his cell, hitting his forehead.

Global News contacted Canadian Foreign Affairs, and a spokesperson issued the following statement:

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of a Canadian Citizen who passed away in Belize. Canadian consular officials in Belize are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to the family.”
