Kelekis closes its doors Wednesday

The city plans to honour the Kelekis family and their restaurant with a new honorary street named Kelekis Way.

The North End restaurant is closing Wednesday after 81 years in business.

Mary Kelekis, one of the daughters of founder Chris Kelekis, has decided at 88 that it’s time to retire. In November, she announced the Main Street diner would close for good at the end of January.

The city will hold a street-naming ceremony outside the restaurant at 12:15 p.m., a news release stated Wednesday morning.

The restaurant was started by Chris Kelekis and his wife, Magdalene, in 1932 as a chip wagon in an old Model T Ford.

Two restaurants opened on Main Street in the 1940s, and the 1100 Main St. location expanded in 1955 to the current building.

Its signature fries are fresh cut for each order and the hotdogs and coleslaw are made from a secret family recipe.

The restaurant boasts a wall of signed photographs of celebrities who have eaten at the diner.

We’ll be live blogging the last day at Kelekis, pulling tweets from diners and Global Winnipeg staff who visit the restaurant on its last day.
