Surrey murder victim had survived attempted hit two years ago

The man found murdered in South Surrey Monday had slipped away from a targeted shooting at a Mr. Lube service centre in Coquitlam two years ago.

On Tuesday police identified Surrey’s fifth homicide victim of the year as 26-year-old Jaskaran Singh Sandhu, found dead Monday morning on the 12300-block Colebrook Road.

Police are not sure whether Sandhu was dumped on the dead-end street or murdered at the scene, and they haven’t indicated how Sandhu was killed.

“Mr. Sandhu was known to police and the victim of a targeted attack,” Cpl. Adam MacIntosh said Tuesday in a statement. “Investigators continue to search for the motive behind his killing including the possibility of being gang related.”

Sandhu, then 25, survived after being hit with several shots at the Mr. Lube parking lot on the 2700-block Barnet Highway in September 2011, according to reports. The Coquitlam Now reported police believed Sandhu had been getting his car serviced when a lone gunman drove up and fired multiple shots at him, before driving away.

In April 2012, police announced a 27-year-old Surrey man faced six charges in connection to the Mr. Lube shooting, including attempted murder using a firearm, extortion and uttering threats.

Court records and news reports show Jaskaran Sandhu has a lengthy list of charges across the Lower Mainland.
