Covered fire hydrants pose problem for Saskatoon firefighters

SASKATOON – Snow covered fire hydrants are posing a problem for Saskatoon firefighters and they are asking homeowners for help.

The issue came to light on Sunday when firefighters had to dig out a snow covered fire hydrant before battling a blaze at an East Centre home.

It is a problem firefighters have encountered more often this year due to the large amounts of snow that has fallen.

“You’re pumped with adrenaline, you’ve got a house fire going, you need that water and that hydrant and you look around and you can’t see anything,” said assistant Chief Bill Coffin.

“It puts a little bit of pressure on the situation.”

Fire and Protective Services is asking homeowners to take a moment and make sure hydrants on properties are uncovered and visible.

Ward 1 Councillor Darren Hill said a future option may be to have the youth works program clear the snow.

“I’d like to see if there is a possibility to enhance that program to provide work opportunities in the winter,” said Hill.

He also said it may be time for the city to look at a fire hydrant clearing policy.
