The Crown has closed its case and the defence will not present any evidence in the first-degree murder trial of Tyler Hurd in the killing of Cynthia Crampton.

On Wednesday morning, the jury finished watching a confession video where Hurd, 35, went into detail about the aftermath of the killing of Crampton.

The jury listened to a taped interview with police from last June, as Hurd explained how after the killing he locked the bathroom door with Crampton’s body inside. He then went about “everyday” things while living in her home for two days.

Crampton, 55, lived in a basement suite in the Stonebridge neighbourhood, which is where her daughter Kara found her body in June 2016.

He told police he used Crampton’s car and stole more than $1,000 from her.

Hurd never cleaned up the basement suite crime scene, saying he was exhausted. He added he knew “a lot about what it would have taken to get her out of there properly” but it was a “daunting task.”

In the days following, Hurd scattered Crampton’s belongings and other evidence around and outside the city.

Hurd said he told his girlfriend, Tammy Poffley, about what he did to Crampton. He said Poffley was disgusted, but proud for standing up for the two of them.

Hurd told an officer in the interview that Crampton would use drugs and made sexual advances toward him.

Police stopped Hurd and Poffley near Asquith, Sask., two days after Crampton’s body was discovered. Hurd said he wanted to go “down in a hail of bullets” rather than go to jail, but he was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder.

“It is what it is. I dropped the rifle. Here we are,” Hurd said in the video.

In the videotaped confession, Hurd apologized to Crampton’s family but also said, “I wouldn’t change it if I could. I regret nothing in my life.”

Hurd told the officer he was suicidal and at one time on 14 different medications for bipolar, depression, suicide and insomnia. He also claimed he had been in the psychiatric ward nine times.

“I was a lost cause before all this started,” Hurd said in the video.

On Wednesday afternoon, the jury heard the Crown’s remaining evidence, including a forensic pathologist who went into graphic details about Crampton’s injuries.

The expert said Crampton’s death was caused by blunt force trauma, with at least 10 separate hits to the head.

Meth was found in Crampton’s body.

The trial will continue Thursday at 1 p.m. CT.
