Suanne Stein Day resigns as chair of LBPSB

Suanne Stein Day has resigned as chairperson of the Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB), effective immediately.

Stein Day had been on a personal leave of absence since the spring and recently informed council that “circumstances have not changed sufficiently enough” for her to return.

“I was off for health reasons and while the situation has improved, it’s not where my doctor wants it to be and it didn’t seem fair to remain on leave any longer,” Stein Day told Global News.

She announced her leave just after a Global News story citing some teachers who alleged they were being forced to pass unqualified students in vocational programs.

An investigation was also launched by the province’s anti-corruption squad to review the practices of both the LBPSB and the English Montreal School Board (EMSB).

Stein Day denied her departure is related to the investigation.

“On behalf of the Council of Commissioners I would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to Suanne for her many years of dedicated service to the Lester B. Pearson School Board,” said acting chair Noel Burke in a written statement.

“We understand and support her decision to step down at this time and wish herself and her family the very best for the future.”

Stein Day, who has been active within the LBPSB since 1999, said in a statement that she wishes all the students nothing but continued success.

She was elected chairperson in 2011 and was reelected in 2014.

“The Council of Commissioners will be moving forward quickly to ensure stability within the organization,” said Burke.

The school board said it will now work to find a replacement ahead of the school board elections.
