Saudi women permitted to attend bike stunt event

WATCH ABOVE: Women in Saudi Arabia were allowed in a public stadium to watch a bike stunt event on Saturday – Nov 7, 2017

In another step towards opening public spaces to women, Saudi Arabia allowed families into a stadium for the first time to watch entertainment.

The only other time women were allowed into a stadium was in September for National Day celebrations.

The occasion this time was a show by Nitro Circus, an American group that performs a variety of stunts.

Davedevil riders took to BMX bikes and motorcycles in a dazzling display that had fans on the edge of their seats.

Circus leader Travis Pastrana said he was overwhelmed by the response.

“Nitro Circus is all about world’s first, doing stuff that’s never been done before.”

“To come over here to Saudi Arabia and to have the first show where women are allowed in the stadium during the action, this is really, really cool for us,” he said.

MC Bruce Robson expressed a similar sentiment.

“The fans in Saudi Arabia have absolutely blown my mind, so loud, so into it, so giving, so warm, they couldn’t wait to say hello to us after the show. They have been nothing but absolutely sensational.”

The event drew a lot of expats. One of them was Suby, an Indian woman living in Riyadh.

“We don’t have any entertainment in KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). This is the first time and we are thinking this is the starting of the entertainment, maybe the film, everything will come.”

Set up in 2010, Nitro Circus has staged shows all over the world and its TV series has been aired in 60 countries.
