CALGARY- A man is facing 39 charges following a police investigation into the business practices of an auto repair shop.
Officers were investigating the cloning of vehicles and unlawful submission of inspection certificates to the province, when they uncovered the alleged fraud at a Calgary business.
It’s believed an employee there signed 39 salvage inspection certificates without conducting inspections on the vehicles. As a result, Alberta Transportation is recalling all of the affected vehicles for re-inspection, to ensure they are safe to drive.

“It presents a real danger to everyone using the roadways,” says S/Sgt. Robert Rutledge from the auto theft unit. “These are vehicles that have been involved in motor vehicle accidents, and suffered structural integrity, so they have to be inspected. An inspection on these vehicles can take up to three hours, so they’re back on the road and we don’t know if they’re safe or not.”
Baltej Dhaliwal, 47, of Calgary faces 39 counts of knowingly entering or recording false documentation.
Anyone whose vehicle is affected by the recall can go for a new inspection, free of charge.
Investigators expect to lay additional charges against several more people as a result of their investigation.
