Motorists advised to stay off certain northern Alberta highways

EDMONTON – RCMP are advising drivers to stay off the highways in Lac La Biche County and the Wood Buffalo municipality because of poor road conditions.

In Lac La Biche County, there are reports of black ice and expected whiteout conditions.

The no-travel advisory includes Highway 36, Highway 55 east and west, Highway 881, Highway 663 and Highway 858.

Environment Canada forecasts five to 10 centimetres of snow Thursday with heavy winds whipping up and causing heavy whiteout conditions.

RCMP say all highways in Lac La Biche County have accumulated snow with black ice forming.

Meanwhile in the Wood Buffalo region, the travel advisory from Wednesday evening is still in effect for all area roads including Highway 881 and Highway 63, especially near Beaconhill in the south and near Supertest hill in the north.

Visibility is very poor due to blowing snow, and the roads are reported to be very slippery as they are packed with snow and partially covered by ice.

In Fort McMurray, RCMP say roads are also in poor condition given the large amount of snow that has been falling since Thursday evening and is expected to continue throughout the day.

Commercial vehicles are strongly recommended to chain-up before traveling on some of the hills within the city limits.

Crews are out, sanding and plowing. Drivers are asked to be courteous and patient and give them room to work.

Motorists who cannot avoid the highways are reminded to drive to the conditions and slow down.
