A Vancouver resident wants the province to face the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal over an “X” designation for gender on a driver’s license and BC Services Card.
Joshua M. Ferguson’s application for a combined driver’s licence/BC Services Card was rejected in August; now, Ferguson wants the tribunal to hear the case.

“That explicitly articulates the breach of my human rights on the grounds of gender identity, gender expression, and sex,” Ferguson said.

“It’s very disappointing and upsetting considering that this current government has made a point in the past about insuring protection and equality for the trans community.”
Ferguson identifies as non-binary – someone who doesn’t conform strictly to male or female gender.
Passport Canada approved Ferguson’s application for an “X” marker on a passport.
After it turned down Ferguson’s application, the Ministry of Health said it wouldn’t rush to decide how it would address gender markers on pieces of ID.
Health Minister Adrian Dix said he was looking to see how Ontario, Newfoundland and the federal government dealt with gender identity before making a decision.
