Danielle Smith: Anything could happen on election day in Calgary

It’s the final weekend of the municipal campaign and it is beginning to look as though it is Bill Smith’s campaign to lose.

Mainstreet Research, the only pollster who has consistently polled throughout the campaign, has found in the final stretch that 36 per cent of voters favour incumbent Mayor Naheed Nenshi. 47 per cent said they will vote for Bill Smith, with only six per cent going to Andre Chabot and 10 per cent still undecided.

Still, anything is possible in the final weekend.

If Nenshi wins, it will be as a result of nervousness around handing a fragile and troubled Calgary economy off to a relatively unknown newcomer, and the power of the Calgary District and Labour Council in getting their union members out to vote.

If Smith wins, it will be because Calgarians really did think there was a need for a change, and conservative organizers succeeded in getting their vote out in a serious effort to rebuild their base of support in the big cities – starting with Calgary.
