Scott Thompson: Let players protest, clearly it’s drawing attention. Why?

NFL brass will meet next week to discuss how to handle the issue of players kneeling during the national anthem.

The NFL is in the eye of the storm in a countrywide divisive debate that it wants nothing to do with and wishes would all just go away.

U.S. President Donald Trump is pressuring the league and owners to take action and dictate that players stand during the national anthem, saying it is unpatriotic not to do so.

What could that possibly solve?

In 2017, how can an American president turn a blind eye to systemic African-American racism in the country (specifically around policing) in the name of patriotism?

I guess the same way you justify guns after a shooter takes out 58 concertgoers from a hotel room loaded to the rafters with ammunition.

What the NFL should do is… nothing, other than draw attention to the cause and promote equality.

Any decision the NFL makes will offend someone. There is no winning strategy here for them.

Their job is let the players use the platform afforded to them to move the discussion forward, then play football.

It’s the right thing to do, and what other choice do they have?
