In 2009: Liberal MLA Ralph Sultan won his third straight election, defeating NDP candidate Terry Platt by 13,001 votes, 67-15%—the largest margin in the province.

History & Geography: Created in in 1966 as North Vancouver-Capilano, and shifting to the west in the 1991 election, the riding consists of all of West Vancouver east of 28th Street, and a small section of northwest North Vancouver. It may have the longest lineage with the BC Liberal Party, having elected the party in 9 of the 12 elections the riding has existed.

Candidates

Liberals-Ralph Sultan: The Minister of Advanced Education and Minister of State for Seniors, Sultan was first elected in 2001. Prior to politics, he served as a senior office for many financial and natural resource companies, and was a Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for the Royal Bank of Canada. He has a PhD, MBA and Master’s degree from Harvard, and a Bachelor of Science from UBC.

NDP-Terry Platt: A BC Ferries employee, Platt works as a customer service attendant, and is a leader in her local union. She was a Youth Leader and Trainer for Scouts Canada for almost two decades. Platt ran for the NDP in this riding in 2005 and 2009, finishing second both times, and ran federally in West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country in 2011, also finishing second.

Conservatives-David Jones: A businessman, Jones is the owner of Magellan Group, a design-build company. He worked for in the hospitality industry for 15 years before studying commercial design at BCIT. Jones ran for West Vancouver council in 2011, but finished 10th out of 13 candidates.

Independent-Michael Markwick: Markwick is a faculty member at Capilano University’s school of communications.

Libertarian-Tunya Audain: A retired bookstore clerk, Audain is one of eight candidates running for the Libertarian party.
