The Ministry of Community Safety and Correction Services is not saying much after the latest medical call to the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre overnight.
There is a Hamilton Fire Department incident report logged for the jail on Barton Street about midnight and it’s listed as being a call for someone with no vital signs.
The fire department says it assisted in transporting the patient to hospital.
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services was contacted for information and it sent back a brief email saying “it can confirm that an inmate from the detention centre was found in medical distress.”

It adds “paramedics were called and the inmate was transported to hospital.”
It went on to say “it would be inappropriate for the ministry to publicly discuss any further details out of respect for personal privacy, especially where health matters are involved.”
The jail has seen at least eight overdose deaths in recent months. They will be the subject of an inquiry in January of next year.
That inquiry will hear from approximately 100 witnesses over 30 days with the jury expected to make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.
