File / Global News

Hamilton Police have charged an 18-year-old Hamilton man with a weapons-related offence following a lockdown at Ancaster’s Bishop Tonnos Catholic High School this morning.

The school was put on lockdown shortly after 8 a.m., after police received information that a former student was on a school bus with a firearm. The reports indicated he got off the bus at the school. Police say they responded with rapid deployment tactics.

The school was cleared by responding officers and the Emergency Response Team. Police say students and staff were able to identify the person and the teenager was arrested nearby about an hour later. Police say they seized an imitation firearm during the arrest.

The students were sent home for the day. This is the second day in a row that students have been sent home early from a Hamilton school.

Tuesday, students at St. Augustine School in Dundas were sent home in the morning after police got a call about a suspicious package in a bathroom.

Police later determined it was not a threat.
