Jim Carrey reveals Tommy Lee Jones couldn’t stand him during ‘Batman Forever’ filming

Batman Forever remains notable in the Caped Crusader’s film franchise for being: a) the only film to feature Val Kilmer as Batman; and b) slightly less awful than the film that followed, the critically reviled Batman and Robin.

And while any high points in the movie can be attributed to Jim Carrey’s manic turn as the Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones’ performance as Two Face, Carrey has previously revealed that he and his co-star did not get along — and now he explains why.

In an interview with the “Norm Macdonald Live” podcast, Carrey tries to put his finger on exactly what his Oscar-winning co-star didn’t like about him.

“I was the star, and that was the problem,” Carrey tells podcast host Norm Macdonald. “Phenomenal actor, though. Still love him.”

As Carrey recalls it, he and Jones met at a restaurant before they were set to begin shooting.
“I went over and said, ‘Hey, Tommy, how you doing?’ And the blood just drained from his face like he had been thinking about me 24 hours a day,” says Carrey.

“It was before the biggest scene we have together in the movie,” he adds. “The blood just drained from his face. He started shaking and he got up and … he must have been in mid-kill-me fantasy or something. He went to hug me and said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ I said, ‘Gee man, what’s the problem?’ I pulled up a chair, which probably wasn’t smart. And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.’”

Carrey thinks that another factor could have been that Jones simply wasn’t that keen on the comic book material. “He might have been uncomfortable doing that work, too,” Carrey adds. “That’s not really his style of stuff.”
