A family dog was the victim of a break and enter gone wrong last week.

On Tuesday, Sept. 26, an 18-year-old man entered a Donnie Reed’s house in the Teulon area and proceeded to take five firearms.

As he was leaving, the suspect ran into Boomer, Reed’s French Mastiff.

The accused then shot Boomer three times with his own weapon and fled. Boomer was brought to the vet, where he was pronounced dead.

“Our pet was absolutely mutilated. Never mind being broken into and having a bunch of your house destroyed, you look at your family pet and he’s just mutilated,” Reed told Global News. “He was still breathing but by the time we got to the vet he was in real bad shape and didn’t make it.”

While the man was leaving the house, the homeowner saw the suspect and called RCMP, who were able to locate and arrest him.

A member of the K-9 unit arrived on the scene with Police Dog Eddie, and discovered the stolen firearms in a bush.

Reed said his entire family is heartbroken, and they even had to put down another pet that was traumatized by the shooting.

“I’ve farmed my whole life. I’ve hunted my whole life, I’ve butchered. But to see something like that is really gut-wrenching. Really gut-wrenching. It’s really hard on me, and even harder on the family and the kids,” Reed explained.

The suspect, Isaiah Flett from Peguis, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, breaking and entering with intent, injuring an animal and breaking and entering to steal a firearm.
