The Calgary Police Service says a man shot by police in Mayland Heights on Wednesday will be facing charges and was known to police prior to the incident.
Acting Chief Ray Robitaille shared new details about the incident during a Thursday news conference at police headquarters.
During the conference, Robitaille said police had previously dealt with the suspect in connection with a series of domestic-related incidents over about nine years, the most recent of which happened over a year ago.
Wednesday’s alleged domestic assault happened at a home in the 900 block of 17A Street N.E. at around 4:15 p.m., police said.
Investigators said the man, believed to be in his 30s, “allegedly assaulted several people prior to leaving the scene.”
He was later found barricaded inside an attached garage at a home in the 500 block of Markerville Road N.E. Police said they had reason to believe he had a weapon.

Police attempted verbal communications with the man for “in excess of an hour” in an effort to have him surrender peacefully, Robitaille said.
“Text message had been received and conversations were being had with family of the person, and there was indication that they were in distress,” he added.
Robitaille said more than 10 officers were at the scene with “many others” – including the CPS Tactical Unit – on-route.
“Their patience and due diligence was exceptional,” he said of the officers at the scene.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the incident, as is standard in all officer-involved shootings in the province.
“We are fully cooperating with ASIRT and respect the parameters of their investigation.”
Robitaille said the three officers under investigation by ASIRT are being put on 30 days of administrative leave.
“As you can well imagine, when you go through a situation like this there are going to be a significant time where you’re going to reflect back on the stressors – and we want them to make sure that those are processed in a healthy fashion before we return them to work,” he said.

Family told Global News the man shot by police was Damon Parisian. He remained in hospital in critical but stable condition as of Thursday night.
Calgary seeing ‘increase’ in domestic calls in 2017
Robitaille said so far in 2017, Calgary police have attended nearly 220,000 calls for service; of those, 15 have resulted in service firearms being pointed at a citizen.
“Which amounts to a fraction of one per cent of all calls for service CPS members attend,” he added.
“Our domestic conflict unit is also witnessing an increase in calls this year,” Robitaille added. “Last month alone we recorded 1,500 domestic incidents, and of those 340 involved violence.”
