The Edmonton Oilers scored three goals in the second period on their way to a 4-1 NHL pre-season win on the road over the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night.

The Jets carried the play in the first period and took a 1-0 lead on an early power play goal by Nik Ehlers. They had an 11-4 advantage in shots.

“We got off to a slow start but we responded. I thought we had really good leadership tonight,” said Oilers head coach Todd McLellan. “They played hard and everybody followed so I was happy with that.”

The Oilers went ahead with two goals 13 seconds apart early in the second. Mark Letestu converted a pass from Jussi Jokinen on the power play. Then, Jujhar Khaira tapped in a cross-crease feed from Zack Kassian.

“He looks and carries himself like a National (Hockey) Leaguer,” Letestu said of Khaira’s performance. “I think that’s really important. He’s got the confidence. He wants to be here (and) he’s put in the work. The skill set has always been there.”

Jokinen added another power play marker with 6:01 left in the period. The puck went in off his skate but officials ruled he didn’t make a distinct kicking motion.

“I like playing with him,” Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said about Jokinen. “He’s such a smart player. He obviously has a lot of experience in this league, a lot of years. He knows what to do out there so I just have to try to read off him. I find we’re a little bit similar with the style that we play.”

Rookie Kailer Yamamoto added an empty net goal with five seconds left in the game.

Edmonton goaltender Laurent Brossoit played the first 33:09 and made 13 saves on 14 shots. Nick Ellis went the rest of the way and stopped all 20 shots he faced.

The Oilers improved to 3-0 in the pre-season. They’ll host the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.
