A controversial recovery home in Rutland has been cleared by Kelowna city council.

The proposed four-storey building located at the corner of McCurdy and Rutland Road North required rezoning.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

After a lengthy public hearing Tuesday, council voted in favour of the rezoning, but the vote wasn’t unanimous with councillors Brad Sieben, Mohini Singh and Charlie Hodge voting in against the project.

The facility will house up to 50 men who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.

Some residents say the facility is too close to schools while others say they fear for their safety.
