Officers found the body of a woman and located a male suspect shortly after.

“There was an incident where a woman was shot and is now deceased and in the investigation of that matter, police learned about a 47-year-old man,” said Ron MacDonald, director of the province’s Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).

According to police, the man drove off in a vehicle and RCMP pursued him until they reached the Lockerbie Memorial Cemetery on Highway 6 in Tatamagouche.

RCMP say they “verbally engaged” with the suspect who was inside the vehicle for several hours, before gunfire was exchanged at around 7 a.m.

The suspect was wounded, taken to hospital for treatment and remains in police custody. Neither RCMP nor SiRT could confirm the extent of the man’s injuries.

The Northeast Nova Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation of the woman’s suspicious death, while SiRT will be looking into the police-involved shooting.

“We understand there were three officers who were involved in taking shots,” said MacDonald.

“We’ll be interviewing witnesses, we’ll be doing further forensic searches et cetera. There will be some intense work over the next several days and then some months of work.”

As a result of the incident, the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board closed all schools on Monday and bus drivers who had already picked up children were told to drop them off at Tatamagouche Elementary.
