Fire ban lifted in Calgary, residents still urged to use caution

A fire ban has been lifted for Calgary residents after having been put in place on Aug. 29.

The fire department lifted the ban after the city saw rainy weather for two days in a row, better air quality and low temperatures.

Residents are still urged to be careful when using outdoor open flames like barbecues and backyard firepits, and when disposing of smoking materials.

“Calgary fire crews continue to respond to outdoor fires created by the improper disposal of smoking materials in planter pots and flower beds,” public information officer Carol Henke said.

The fire department is also reminding residents to familiarize themselves with the city’s bylaw standards for firepits.

Calgary twice broke temperature records this summer: temperatures soared to 32.4 C on Aug. 30, breaking a 21-year record, and reached 29 C on Sept. 11, breaking the last record of 28.9 C, which was set in 1968.
