The final show has come and gone for Halifax’s iconic Oxford Theatre.
“I got taken here for the first time as a little kid and I saw, I think it was some documentary about bird migration but ever since then, this has been my home to come see amazing movies,” Andrew Coll said, one of the dozens of people who came for the theatre’s final screening.
The theatre was owned by Cineplex and recently sold to the Nanco Group, a local business owned by the Nahas family.

“I live out on the south shore now but I came in today just to catch this,” Shelley Milsom said.
The Oxford Theatre first opened its doors in 1937 and has been a mainstay on the corner of Quinpool Road and Oxford Street, ever since.
“This has a lot of character and ambiance and it’s cozy, it’s got a balcony, it’s kind of like, a little bit almost retro at this point,” Heather Dzioba said, another Oxford Theatre patron.

The final two movies played on September 13 were ‘Singing in the Rain’ and ‘Titanic.’
“It’s been apart of my life as long as I can remember and I think it’s been an amazing 80 years and we’ll miss it but we’ll remember the good times,” Coll said.
Cineplex says it’ll move the art house and independent films that normally screened at the Oxford to its Park Lane cinemas location.
