Security cameras captured video of a German pensioner losing control of his car and repeatedly crashing into a gas station Wednesday afternoon in the town of Wendlingen.

Police said the 77-year-old driver likely confused the accelerator with the brake pedal and the forward and reverse gear.

According to a witness who had just arrived to fill up on petrol, the driver backed into his van before the black station wagon slammed into the gas station’s entrance area where it was stopped by a wall between two refrigerators.

“In front of me there was a parked car right in front of the gas station entrance,” Markus Jentschke said. “That seemed strange to me, so I put [my vehicle] in reverse gear and wanted to go backwards, but then the car also began to reverse and slammed into me. Then he put his car into forward gear and drove directly into the entrance area of the gas station.”
