Students in Surrey, like most others across B.C., are headed back to school.
However, some have to deal with some extreme overcrowding.
A student at Earl Marriott Secondary School, who wishes to remain anonymous, says she enrolled in Chemistry 12 last year.
“When the schedule came, I wasn’t on it,” she says.
“So I went to my counsellors, and unfortunately since there was too many kids that picked it for the actual course, the computer didn’t randomly select me.”

She says she was told there were too many students who chose Chem 12, and she ended up 5th on a waiting list.
She looked into night school, but because the class was so far from home, she had to rule it out.
The young woman says it’s frustrating and unfair.
“In grade 12 I need to do that for graduating, and I can’t even get into an academic course when I need it. It’s crazy. It’s due to the overcrowding that they have had issues with, and there are too many kids for the amount of courses they can offer.”
The student says the course would also be beneficial heading to university.
“My counsellor’s been very good about, she feels very bad about the whole situation. There’s nothing she can do because they only have a certain amount of Chemistry classes.”
She says she may have to consider an online course instead.
