Fire crews quickly knocked down an intense fire at an abandoned house in the Whalley area of Surrey early Wednesday.

When crews arrived around 1:30 a.m. they found the home in the 10400-block of 140 Street fully engulfed in flames.

They had to fight the massive fire defensively to prevent it from spreading.

“It was not a difficult fire to fight but crews went defensive because of the fire coming out of the home and the roof being unsecured at the time,” said Surrey Battalion Chief Reo Jerome.

“It’s been really dry lately and crews had to protect trees and exposures around the structure.”

No neighbouring houses were affected and at this time it appears no one was injured.

It is not known how the fire started however.

There are unconfirmed reports the roof on the structure collapsed. Fire investigators will be on scene Wednesday morning to search for a cause.
