The Saskatoon Police Service wants used car sellers and shoppers to be smart sellers and shoppers.
Police said they are aware of an emerging trend where sellers have had their vehicle stolen.

Shoppers have also ended up buying stolen vehicles.
Police officials said there are a number of steps people can take to ensure their vehicle isn’t stolen or that they haven’t bought a stolen vehicle:
- record the license plate number on the vehicle of the person you are doing business with;
- take a picture of the persons driver’s license – ensure validity;
- ensure the seller’s license matches their registration;
- remove the registration from the vehicle you are selling;
- go on the test drive and have a cellphone with you in case of an emergency;
- check the vehicle identification number (VIN) with SGI to confirm there are no issues;
- check the VIN on the CPIC website; and
- check the ISC website for loans or liens on the vehicle
Police also recommend asking about the vehicle’s history.
They said if the seller can’t answer questions about the vehicle or just came to own it, it could have been stolen.
