Special weather statement for smoke in eastern Saskatchewan

Wildfire Evacuations

Evacuation orders have been given to several northern Saskatchewan communities due to smoke and road closures caused by northern wildfires.

People with an evacuation order for their community are being housed in congregate shelters, hotels and with family or friends.

Emergency Social Services is currently supporting residents from the communities of Birch Portage and Pelican Narrows.

Approximately 450 people are being transported from Pelican Narrows to a congregate shelter in Saskatoon.

The resort community of Jan Lake has declared a state of emergency due to smoke concerns from area wildfires.

15 residents of the mostly seasonal community will self-evacuate and stay with family and friends.

Daily activities, such as games, movie nights, and musical entertainment are also coordinated within the shelters.

Special Air Quality Statement

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for the Kamsack, Canora, Preeceville, Hudson Bay, Pelican Narrows, Cumberland House, Creighton and Flin Flon areas for elevated pollution levels that are expected or occurring.

High levels of air pollution due to forest fire smoke from wildfires in northern Saskatchewan is affecting areas in central Manitoba and starting to affect east-central Saskatchewan.

Local wind flow will still affect the distribution of the heaviest smoke, but in general, areas in east-central Saskatchewan will see reduced visibility and extremely poor air quality at times during the day on Tuesday and overnight.

On Wednesday, light easterly winds develop and may begin to direct smoke into more areas in central Saskatchewan.

Saskatoon Forecast

Today

A few fog patches started the day in Saskatoon with temperatures dipping back to 9 degrees.

Mostly sunny skies stuck around all morning, helping warm us up into the mid 20s by noon.

The climb continues into the afternoon with a daytime high in the upper 20s with a few more clouds filtering through later on.

Tonight

Mostly clear skies linger tonight as we cool back into low double digits.

Wednesday

A high sliding by to the north will keep the city under mostly sunny skies Wednesday.

A building upper ridge will truck back in sizzling 30 degree heat by afternoon with a breezy south-southeasterly wind in excess of 35 km/h, gusting into the 50 km/h range, also helping warm things up.

Thursday-Friday

30 degree heat from that ridge will stick around to end August on Thursday as a trough slides through and kicks up the clouds and a chance of showers and risk of a thunderstorm.

Then a cold front trails behind on Friday to kick off September, dropping daytime highs back into the mid 20s with clearing skies and a breezy northwesterly wind.

Long Weekend Outlook

It’ll be a slightly cooler September long weekend in Saskatoon, especially compared to the work week, but with daytime highs in the low-to-mid 20s, we’ll still be above our normal high of 21 degrees with clouds in and out right into Labour Day Monday.
