Medical issues force Trax, St. Thomas police’s first K9, to retire

After roughly three and a half years on the job, Trax is retiring from the St. Thomas Police Service.

Trax and his handler Const. Sean James formed the service’s first-ever Canine Unit in 2013, with the two completing training with the London Police Service from September 2013 to January 2014.

On Monday, St. Thomas police issued a statement confirming the pure-bred Shepherd is hanging up his badge due to gracilis myopathy. The condition results in restricted movement in the gracilis muscle, located in the dog’s hind leg.

“Although we are sad to see Trax go we are reassured knowing he will live out his days as a beloved house pet to PC James and his family enjoying much love and many treats,” the statement read.

The St. Thomas Police Service added that the K9 program will continue and they look forward to introducing a new K9 soon.
