Edmonton election 2017: Michael Walters wins Ward 10

Michael Walters will serve another term as councillor of Ward 10 in Edmonton.

Global News declared the incumbent candidate as the winner based on unofficial voting results, after 14 of 22 polls were reporting.

Michael Walters currently serves on council as the voice for south Edmonton’s Ward 10. He was elected in 2013 and is seeking re-election for a second term.

Here is a quick look at the candidates running in Ward 10:

Vieri Berretti

Vieri Berretti has worked in the food and hospitality industry for more than three decades, and is the former president of Latitude 53. He said he is running for council because he cares about the future of Edmonton. He said density and infill, LRT congestion and surplus school sites are all important issues faced by the people of Ward 10.

Samantha Hees

Samantha Hees is a child-care provider. She is focused on creating a food-secure city, building affordable, sustainable and responsible infill and providing accessible transit for all Edmontonians.

Sim Senol

Sim Senol is relatively new to Edmonton, having moved to the city in 2011. She works in the human resources (HR) department at the University of Alberta. She said her campaign is about finding ways to “tap the potential.” She said her platform will especially focus on women and newcomers.

Michael Walters

Michael Walters has represented Ward 10 since 2013 and currently sits on two city committees. He is the council lead on the city’s housing, ELEVATE and public engagement initiatives.

Glenda K. Williams

Glenda K. Williams said her vision for the future is one of building community, better financial management and planning. Her priorities include low-income housing, ending homelessness and poverty and addressing the issues of affordable infill.

In total, 13 people are running for mayor and there are 70 candidates for city council. Twenty people are running to become Edmonton Catholic School Board trustees, while 28 people are running to become Edmonton Public School Board trustees (including one acclamation).

Election day is Monday, Oct. 16.
