7-year-old boy drowns in western Alberta river

Whitecourt RCMP responded to reports of a possible drowning in Mcleod River near a recreation area at around 4:30 Thursday afternoon.

Once they arrived on scene, officers found EMS and members of the Whitecourt Fire Department treating a seven-year-old boy “in medical distress.”

STARS Air Ambulance was dispatched, but the little boy passed away Thursday evening.

“The RCMP would like to express their condolences to the family during this difficult time,” police said in a news release Friday.

“Our thoughts are with the family and the community at this time of need.”

The boy’s name is not being released.

The Mcleod River Provincial Recreation Area is approximately 280 kilometres west of Edmonton.
