Residents are being encouraged to sound off on a major road expansion project, as staff lay the groundwork to overhaul an eight-kilometre portion of Wonderland Road.

The stretch between Sarnia and Southdale roads has become known as the “Wonderland Road parking lot.”

City staff hope the “Discover Wonderland” project will ease congestion by expanding the road from four lanes to six. The section of road is used by upwards of 43,000 vehicles a day.

“We’ll be looking at the turning lanes, the traffic signals, the Guy Lombardo bridge,” said Coun. Virginia Ridley. “There may be sections where it makes more sense or less sense depending on the traffic flow.”

Council could have a recommendation to debate by the end of next year, but it’s expected to take around five years to solidify and approve the plans with construction expected to take another five years.

Ridley said they’ve started to consult with the public as staff work on the environmental assessment (EA) for the project.

“Since we’ve launched the EA, I’ve been getting some different points of view,” she said. “I have people concerned about the project costs and the construction disruption, so that’s an important part of the EA. It’s an opportunity for residents to learn more about the project, to voice their concerns, and to highlight areas being the primary uses of the road that they want to make sure that the city is aware of.”

Early estimates peg the potential cost at around $55 million.
