Edmonton Oilers sign Jussi Jokinen to 1-year contract

The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Jussi Jokinen to a one-year contract on Friday.

The 34-year-old played with the Florida Panthers last season, posting 28 points in 69 games. He also served as alternate captain.

In 2015-16, Jokinen had 60 points in 81 games with the Panthers.

Jokinen also represented his home country of Finland at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Jokinen has played in 891 career NHL games with Dallas, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Pittsburgh and Florida.

The contract is worth a reported $1.1 million.

Jokinen’s signing comes on the heels of a massive contract for Oilers’ star centre Connor McDavid, announced on Wednesday.

McDavid, 20, signed a contract extension with the team worth $100 million over eight years. It’ll kick in for the 2018-19 season and run through 2025-26.

Oilers fan are still anxiously awaiting the signing of forward Leon Draisaitl, who had 77 points in 82 games with the team last season.

Jokinen was originally selected by the Dallas Stars in the sixth round, 192nd overall, of the 2001 NHL draft.
