Dozens of cows stolen from Manitoba farm

A Rossburn area farmer said two cows were left for dead after thieves stole dozens more from his pasture. Kalvin Kreshewski

A Rossburn Man., farmer is still trying to piece together how thieves stole dozens of cows from his farm.

On Tuesday Kalvin Kreshewski discovered 21 cows and 30 calves missing from a pasture 32 kilometers from his home.

He said the thieves also left two cows to die.

“Emotionally I felt like throwing up,” Kreshewski said.  “You just can’t believe that can happen.”

The herd roams a pasture that includes two lakes for drinking water, but Kreshewski believes the cattle were herded into a penned area, and then loaded onto trucks.

Two cows were left behind in that locked area, where there is no water, and later died.

“There is water just four feet from them, but they couldn’t access it,” he said.

Kreshewski called the RCMP.  The Rossburn detachment confirmed it is investigating.

He believes the cattle may have been stolen late last week.

The loss of the cattle could end up costing the farmer anywhere between $65,000 and $80,000 dollars.  But the remaining cattle are also struggling.

“Now I have calves without moms, and moms without calves,” Kreshewski said.”They’re scared and spooked right now.”

He’s says those calves might be able to nurse from the remaining cows.

Rossburn is 315 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg.
