2 more arrests made in Father’s Day slaying of William Sumner

WINNIPEG — Winnipeg police have arrested two men in connection to the June 18 murder of William Sumner.

Gene Lester Joseph Malcolm, 33, and Jonathan Erin Catcheway, 28, were arrested on Thursday. Both have been charged with manslaughter and are well-known to police.

Sumner was shot inside a home in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue on Father’s Day.

Police said the shooting was drug related and the men have gang connections.

Winnipeg police said the incident started as fight inside the home and allege 32-year-old Cameron Kinnavanthong shot Sumner multiple times, causing critical injuries.

However, it took days before police were able to arrest Kinnavanthong.

On June 20, police said they were called to a road incident involving him in the area of Logan Ave. and Keewatin St.

Kinnavanthong allegedly pointed a gun at another motorist.

Two days later, officers observed the suspect’s vehicle at a home in the same area.

Officers from multiple units, along with the ARV1, arrested him, without incident.

Inside the home, they found multiple weapons including a very dangerous high-capacity assault rifle.

Kinnavanthong was charged with second-degree murder, plus several other charges related to possession of weapons and other restricted devices.
