With the Canada Day long weekend coming up, police are getting ready and hoping the number of incidents caused by drinking and driving goes down this year.
Police say on average, every year one person is killed, 180 people are injured, and 640 crashes take place in B.C. on Canada Day.

“A relaxed approach can cause us to relax our judgement, make bad decisions about driving that may not be safe or sober,” said VPD Deputy Chief Warren Lemcke.
“Tragically in British Columbia each year an average of 66 people are killed in impaired driving crashes. That’s an average of one completely preventable death every five days.”
He says police across B.C. will be ramping up the number of road checks throughout the province.
