Move over Uber, there’s a new kind of taxi in Fredericton and it’s paw-sitively perfect for dog lovers. Shelley Steeves has more – Jun 28, 2017

A Fredericton university student has started up a new taxi service in the city that has given him the opportunity to combine his love of dogs with an expansion of his family’s current business.

Daniel Tichonov and his family moved to Canada from Israel just over eight years ago. Originally from Moscow, his mother Yana said the family moved looking for a more peaceful life, but their pet dog Rocky wasn’t able to come.

“It was very hard. He was 16 years old and just a couple of months before we moved he passed away,” Yana said.

For Daniel, losing their dog was particularly difficult as he was a young teenager when the dog died.

“It took us a while to digest it and then about two or three years later we decide to get a dog and a few dogs and this all started,” Daniel said.

They came together like a well bonded pack, and the family of newcomer dog lovers opened a dog sitting and grooming business called “Lovely Doggy House” from their home in Fredericton five years ago.

Yana says it has been a rewarding experience.

But Daniel, now 22, and about to finish his studies in finance, wanted to rev up the family business.

“I started a pet taxi,” said Daniel, who has called his business Pets2Go Taxi.

He has only been in business for about two months, but he said things are rolling out well.

“So if you are busy you can just give me a call and I can pick your pet up from your house and drive it to your desired destination.”

Many of his clients are already customers of the doggy daycare.

“Some people can’t come on time to pick up their dogs and some people have to leave earlier for an appointment.”

But Daniel said he also runs people’s pets to and from vet appointments.

He’s even rigged up the van so that people can comfort their sick or injured pets as they travel along safety strapped into the back.

“This is not for fun traveling, it’s for emergency,” he said.

Daniel hopes to expand his pet taxi service across the Maritimes and maybe even the country.

He said he does taxi around cats too, but right now most of his passengers are of the canine variety.
