WINNIPEG — A well known grocer in Winnipeg’s intercity is in danger of losing its home.

Staff at Neechi Foods Co-op are gathering supporters and looking for ways to keep their business alive in their current building, before it is put up for auction on July 12.

“Neechi Commons is not for sale. It’s our land that’s being challenged here,” President of Neechi Foods Co-Op, Louise Champagne said.

Assiniboine Credit Union is in the process of recovering a mortgage loan from Neechi Commons. Champagne said the bank has scheduled an auction to sell the building, creating a crisis for the business.

“We’re at a stage where some creative solutions have to be done so that we don’t lose our land and building,” Champagne said.

For more than four years, the aboriginal-owned grocer has been bringing food, arts and crafts to the north end of Winnipeg’s intercity.

Champagne said there has been overwhelming support from customers and residents to keep the business in the Main Street building.

“It’s great to see the community response because people recognize it as a community asset and want to keep it going.”

Champagne said regardless of what happens, Neechi Foods will continue to do business in Winnipeg.

Assiniboine Credit Union has not responded to a request for an interview.
